A little Mermaid
TERMS AND CONDITIONS Mermaid Arts Centre, Main St, Bray, Co Wicklow Sat noon-10pm 01-2724030
As part of the Mermaid’s fifth birthday celebrations, Pauline Cummins and Aideen Barry curate a day of performance art, live and on video, from 12 noon till 10 in the evening. Rather than being centred in the gallery, the works reach out into the various communal spaces at Mermaid and, indeed, beyond. First come the live performances, with Lisa Marie Johnson in the Mermaid Plaza at noon and 5pm, Barry herself with a sound piece at 2.30pm (also in the Plaza), Frances Mazzetti at 3pm (in the Cash & Carry opposite Bray Dart station), brother-and-sister team Sinead and Hugh O’Donnell at 4pm (in the Mermaid’s Multi-Purpose Room), Fergus Byrne onstage at 9pm and, somewhere in the midst of all this, Sandra Johnston (above) will make some interventions.
Between 6pm and 10pm, performance videos by a dozen artists will by screened in the car park. The artists – in many cases also the performers – are Aine Phillips, Amanda Coogan, Vivienne Dick, Aileen Lambert, Susan McWilliam, Dominic Thorpe, Louise Manifold, Elizabeth Porritt, Augustine O’Donoghue, Mazzetti, Barry and Cummins. Recent years have seen something of a renaissance of performance art in Ireland, and Terms and Conditions provides an unmissable opportunity to check out the state of the art.
