Haydn in D major
ICO/STEVEN ISSERLIS (CELLO) NCH, Dublin Wed 8pm 115-125 01-4170000; University Concert Hall, Limerick Thurs 8PM 115-125 1890-923543 CIT Cork School of Music, Cork Fri 15th 8PM 120, 125 1890-923543 Leading cellist Steven Isserlis (above) played Haydn’s C major Cello Concerto for his first appearance with the Irish Chamber Orchestra back in 1982. His return to the orchestra, for a short tour visiting Dublin, Limerick and Cork, sees him playing the composer’s other cello concerto, the much-better known Concerto in D, in an all-Haydn programme.
Making up what’s also an all-D-major programme are two Haydn symphonies, with Isserlis conducting the orchestra in the little-known and early No. 13 as well as the mature and famous No. 104, the one nicknamed the London.
