OPERA NORTH Grand Opera House, Belfast Tues-Sat 23rd £18.25-£39.75 048-90241919

Leeds-based Opera North, which is the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s current replacement for Opera Northern Ireland (which the council de-funded in 1998), brings its most adventurous season yet to the Grand Opera House in Belfast this week. There’s just a single performance (on Wednesday) of the company’s highlypraised production of Britten’s Peter Grimes. Jeffrey LloydRoberts is the tormented Grimes, with Belfast soprano Giselle Allen returning to her native city as Ellen Orford. The production is directed by Phyllida Lloyd, designed by Anthony Ward, and conducted by Richard Farnes.

There are two performances (Friday 22nd at 7.30pm and Saturday 23rd at 6pm) of Jonathan Dove’s new The Adventures of Pinocchio (left), a work which has also been extremely well received in its attempt to create an opera that will appeal to opera-goers young and old. And there are also two performances (Tuesday and Thursday) of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, with Anne Sophie Duprels in the title role.
