CAMPO VIEJO SPANISH FILM FESTIVAL Irish Film Institute, Dublin Mar 19-30 www.irishfilm.ie Featuring 22 movies from Spain and or in Spanish, the festival opens on Wednesday with Julio Medem’s characteristically unconventional new movie Chaotic Ana (pictured), starring Manuela Vellés as a young artist experiencing terrifying visions and Charlotte Rampling as her mysterious patron.
Director Félix Viscarret will attend the festival with his award-winning Under the Stars, in which a self-absorbed jazz trumpeter returns home for his father’s funeral. Actor Gael García Bernal doubles as star and director for the Mexican movie Defecit, while another actor, Antonio Banderas, stays behind the camera as the director of Summer Rain.
The line-up includes such well-regarded films as XXY (Argentina), The Pope’s Toilet (Uruguay), The Zone (Mexico), and Daniel Sánchez Arévalo’s morally complex Spanish drama, Darkbluealmostblack.
As a tribute to Spanish actor Fernando Fernán Gómez, who died in November, the festival will screen Victor Erice’s haunting, visually striking 1973 drama, The Spirit of the Beehive, in which he stars.
