CAMPO VIEJO SPAN­ISH FILM FES­TI­VAL Ir­ish Film In­sti­tute, Dublin Mar 19-30­ Fea­tur­ing 22 movies from Spain and or in Span­ish, the fes­ti­val opens on Wed­nes­day with Julio Me­dem’s char­ac­ter­is­ti­cally un­con­ven­tional new movie Chaotic Ana (pic­tured), star­ring Manuela Vel­lés as a young artist ex­pe­ri­enc­ing ter­ri­fy­ing vi­sions and Char­lotte Ram­pling as her mys­te­ri­ous pa­tron.

Di­rec­tor Félix Vis­car­ret will at­tend the fes­ti­val with his award-win­ning Un­der the Stars, in which a self-ab­sorbed jazz trum­peter re­turns home for his fa­ther’s funeral. Ac­tor Gael Gar­cía Ber­nal dou­bles as star and di­rec­tor for the Mex­i­can movie De­fecit, while an­other ac­tor, An­to­nio Ban­deras, stays be­hind the cam­era as the di­rec­tor of Sum­mer Rain.

The line-up in­cludes such well-re­garded films as XXY (Ar­gentina), The Pope’s Toi­let (Uruguay), The Zone (Mex­ico), and Daniel Sánchez Aré­valo’s morally com­plex Span­ish drama, Dark­blueal­most­black.

As a trib­ute to Span­ish ac­tor Fer­nando Fernán Gómez, who died in Novem­ber, the fes­ti­val will screen Vic­tor Erice’s haunt­ing, vis­ually strik­ing 1973 drama, The Spirit of the Bee­hive, in which he stars.
