HOT CHIP Tripod, Dublin Thurs 7.30pm 137.20/134.50 0818-719300 Take a pinch of Kraftwerk, a hint of New Order and a love of Prince. Mix it all up with Oxbridge accents, unlikely looks (beards, NHS specs) and a keen sense of the absurd and you have Hot Chip. The band (who were nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2006 for their debut album, The Warning) have surprised many with their most recent album, Made in the Dark.

While it was once presumed that HC would never veer anywhere near the mainstream, their second album seduced the buyer into thinking they were listening to a chart-hugging group. Their tendency to indulge in what has been described as “squelchy analogue tomfoolery” threatens to undermine their brilliance, but such shenanigans are minimised by the band’s overall approach to music: head-turning, gleeful and arch.
