Pugwash move on up

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - Listings - TONY CLAYTON-LEA

PUGWASH Whelan’s, Dublin Thurs 9pm 116 01-4780766/ 1890-200078 With an excellent new album, Eleven Modern Antiquities (see review, page 14), in the shops from today, extensive radio play for the latest single, Take me Away, and a demeanour that would put a smile on at least two faces on Mount Rushmore, it seems that, after years of giving his all to giving it a go, Thomas Walsh (above, right) is now ready to move up a notch or two. A full Irish tour to promote the album is unlikely, so what we’re left with (so far, anyway) is this Dublin gig, which promises to reach the parts other gigs can’t. Some guests are scheduled (Divine Comedy’s Neil Hannon (above, centre) is on the album, so he may turn up), which adds to the fun. Factor in some of the best Beatles/XTCinfluenced pop music you’ll hear in an age and you have a certifiable hit.
