Cassard plays Schubert
PHILIPPE CASSARD (PIANO) NCH, Dublin Wed 8pm 115-140 01-4170000
Irish audiences seem to have a soft spot for French pianist Philippe Cassard (left) that’s akin to parents’ fondness for their first-born. Cassard took the top prize in the first Dublin International Piano Competition back in 1988.
He’s been a regular visitor ever since, and returns on Wednesday for an appearance in the Irish Times Celebrity Series that also celebrates the 20th anniversary of his competition success. He’s chosen an all-Schubert programme, but one with a twist. Before the first set of Impromptus and the large-scale, late Sonata in A, he’s offering four songs from Schwanengesang in the arrangements by Liszt.
