BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

VH1 Storytellers Sony BMG

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - Music Reviews -

VHI always make a good fist of its Storytellers series, and here Springsteen gets up close and personal about the stories behind some of his most memorable songs. If you’re looking for the full on Bruce and the E Street Band live extravaganza, look elsewhere. This just features the man himself, either on guitar or piano, playing slightly differently arranged versions of such songs as Devils and Dust, Brilliant Disguise and The Rising. Springsteen reveals himself to be an insightful and witty commentator on his own work, its religious imagery and his political beliefs. This is a low-key affair in tone and presentation, but it really is like an intimate chat with a musical great. And Springsteen himself even mentions at one stage how much preparatory work he put into the exercise.
