A trio of jazz top brass
BRAD SHEPIK TRIO Crawdaddy, Dublin Mon 7.30pm 120 01-6703885/ 0818-719300 Triskel Arts Centre, Cork Tues 9pm 130 (supper & concert)/ 118/116 (concert only) 021-4272022 Guitarist Brad Shepik first came here 10 years ago with trumpeter Dave Douglas’s adventurous and groundbreaking Tiny Bell Trio. Since then, his CV has embraced the highest levels of the current US jazz scene, including work with Paul Motian, Carla Bley, Charlie Haden and Joey Baron, as well as venturing outside the jazz fold into world music. But the heavyweight trio he brings here, for a very brief Irish tour, is drawn from the jazz aristocracy: Tom Rainey is one of the greatest of contemporary jazz drummers, able to bring a fresh imagination to any context, while pianist Gary Versace, who plays Hammond organ with the trio, is a rising talent on that instrument. And it’s a working group. Their perspective on one of the venerable jazz line-ups, the organ trio, can be heard in Dublin and in Cork this week.
