Shorter in Shannon
SHANNON INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL Various venues, Limerick, Jul 9-12 061-331549 The Irish Chamber Orchestra’s MBNA Shannon International Music Festival is spreading its wings. Or, if you look at it another way, it’s tilting its aim away from what used to be its core audience. Last year’s main draw was Sinéad O’Connor; this year, jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter is the star attraction at the “the opening flagship concert”, with not a whiff of the Irish Chamber Orchestra itself on the night.
The orchestra gives a “Wild & Eclectic” programme with pianist Joanna MacGregor (above) on Thursday (Britten, Dowland, Piazzolla, Bach and James MacMillan), and MacGregor offers a selection of Messiaen’s Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus in a late-night Saturday slot.
Among the other events, ICO artistic director Anthony Marwood leads a performance of Schubert’s Octet on Friday, directs Four Seasons performances from Europe (Vivaldi) and South America (Piazzolla) on Saturday, and there are also concerts from composer/ pianist Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, mezzo soprano Paula Murrihy, and the ICO under Sian Edwards.
