JIM JEFFRIES Laughter Lounge, Dominick St, Galway Wed 9pm 112.50 091-568340; Laughter Lounge, Eden Qy, Dublin Thurs 8.30pm 120 1800-266339 One of the most-watchedever comedian clips on YouTube is that of Australian comic Jim Jeffries being punched in the face by an irate punter. Seen by more than seven million people, the clip illustrates the risks Jeffries sometimes takes as a straight-talking comic who long ago dispensed with the usual niceties.

There’s a bracing honesty to Jeffries’s material – rather than talk around subjects, he gets straight to the gritty core, and while some might bridle at his directness, you can’t but admire his courage and speed of thought. This type of “shock” material can go either way – sometimes it can be gratuitous and self-indulgent, but with Jeffries there’s always more going on than is apparent on the surface. Be warned though: these two Irish shows are not for the faint-hearted or the easily offended. BRIAN BOYD
