Ul­ster com­posers get youth vote in Belfast

Last week it was as part of the BBC Five Na­tions sea­son with the Ul­ster Orches­tra, this week it’s from the Ul­ster Youth Orches­tra un­der Takuo Yuasa, of­fer­ing a re­peat of Howard Fer­gu­son’s Four Diver­sions on Ul­ster Airs, as well as Deirdre McKay’s new Fire­works at Lugh­nasadh.

Michael McHale (be­low) is the pi­ano soloist in Rach­mani­nov’s Rhap­sody on a theme of Pa­ganini and the orches­tra stays in Rus­sian ter­ri­tory for the clos­ing work, Shostakovich’s Fifth Sym­phony, the piece which rec­on­ciled the com­poser with the Soviet au­thor­i­ties in 1937 af­ter the trou­bles pro­voked by his opera Lady Mac­beth of Mt­sensk.
