Landscape at its limits
TOWNLANDS Macroom Town Hall, Macroom, Co Cork Until Aug 30 026-41545 A solo show of the work of photographer Con Kelleher is a terrific idea, and it’s all the more appropriate that it is being held in his hometown of Macroom, in Co Cork.
Townlands, curated by Norah Norton, nominally consists of landscapes (Kelleher is also known as a portrait photographer), though the term doesn’t quite do justice to the photographs. Better to say that Kelleher’s work, which is tremendously thoughtful and introspective, arises from an openness to and experience of place, filtered through a meditative sensibility. As Tim Goulding
10,000 to 50: points out in his catalogue text, while many of the images could be described as abstract, the term is not strictly accurate. Kelleher doesn’t treat his subject matter as a raw material from which to manufacture abstractions, rather he wants, through the sheer intensity of engagement, to push the subject matter to its pictorial limits, and the results have a dreamy, hypnotic quality. They are, as well, endlessly fascinating visually. AIDAN DUNNE can’T see ThaT? caTch This Atsushi Kaga Butler Gallery, Kilkenny Castle
