Haydn’s best piano trios are among his finest creations, and the Florestan Trio’s selection of four late, great trios includes some of the cream of the crop. Violin and cello defer to the piano in these works, a feature which has not endeared them to modern performers. But the level of invention is remarkably high, and the twists and turns of the surprises that Haydn spins out so generously are a constant delight. The Florestan’s performances are tight in ensemble, with elegantly angular contributions from pianist Susan Tomes and a combination of acute observation and self-effacement from cellist Richard Lester. Violinist Anthony Marwood can be the perfect partner, but sometimes leans on the music for the kind of expressive yields that were to come in a later era. www.tinyurl.com/ 5jub7c
