Toro Y Moi: turning up the buzz
Chaz Bundick is Toro Y Moi, a South Carolina one-man band whose slow-burning, lo-fi dream-pop odysseys have been exciting music bloggers and new music talent spotters for the past couple of months.
Causers of This is the first of two planned Toro Y Moi albums in 2010, and we can expect a more amplified buzz about Chaz and his tunes to follow. It’s an album with a lot to admire and love, as Bundick channels his fondness for slightly out-of-focus beats and bleeps into an occasionally mesmerising, sometimes captivating wash of sound.
Fans of new-ish dreampop acts such as Memory Tapes and Washed Out will find much to like here.
Bundick first made an impact with home-state band The Heist and the Accomplice, but it’s his Panda Bear-like atmospherics, fizzy indie echoes, distorted lo-fi freakouts and breezy, soulful sweeps of sound that have caused much more of an reaction.
When he’s not in Toro Y Moi mode, Bundick produces house cuts as Les Sins, though he’s hardly going to have much time for that side project in the coming months, especially if he expects to get a second album out.
