The changes in film dis­tri­bu­tion prac­tices con­tinue apace with the news that YouTube, work­ing in con­junc­tion with Sony and Warner Brothers, is to launch a movie rental ser­vice. From next month, US users will be able to rent re­cent re­leases from as lit­tle as $2 (about ¤1.35).

YouTube has al­ready dab­bled with re­leas­ing in­de­pen­dent fea­tures, but the cur­rent move of­fers fur­ther ev­i­dence that stu­dios see their fu­ture on­line. Those wor­ried about the ad­vance of in­ter­net big brothers will note that the video-shar­ing site is owned by the mighty Google. Meet the new boss.
