Push is on for Christmas No 1
The Saw Doctors are making a bid for the Irish Christmas number one slot with a cover of Petula Clark’s 1960s pop hit Downtown – and what’s more, they’ve even roped the 79-year-old Clark into featuring on the track and in the video. The single will be released on December 16th, in time for the final rush for the top slot.
Other tracks making a bid to topple the still-to-bedecided X Factor winner’s dominance of the Christmas Number 1 slot include usual suspects Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber, while The Killers have released The Cowboys’ Christmas Ball as their sixth annual charity single.
Irish comedy act Damo and Ivor are also making a bid for the top with their song Thank God it’s Christmas. Yet plans are being made and Facebook campaigns launched that could cause an upset, with many pledging their support to push Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit into the top spot.
A campaign urging An Idiot Abroad star Karl Pilkington to release his version of Chas & Dave’s Ain’t No Pleasin’ You for charity has also been launched. Voting is now open for the fifth Irish Festival Awards. There 20 categories in all. festivalawards.ie
