Push is on for Christ­mas No 1

The Saw Doc­tors are mak­ing a bid for the Ir­ish Christ­mas num­ber one slot with a cover of Petula Clark’s 1960s pop hit Down­town – and what’s more, they’ve even roped the 79-year-old Clark into fea­tur­ing on the track and in the video. The sin­gle will be re­leased on De­cem­ber 16th, in time for the fi­nal rush for the top slot.

Other tracks mak­ing a bid to top­ple the still-to-be­de­cided X Fac­tor win­ner’s dom­i­nance of the Christ­mas Num­ber 1 slot in­clude usual sus­pects Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber, while The Killers have re­leased The Cow­boys’ Christ­mas Ball as their sixth an­nual char­ity sin­gle.

Ir­ish com­edy act Damo and Ivor are also mak­ing a bid for the top with their song Thank God it’s Christ­mas. Yet plans are be­ing made and Face­book cam­paigns launched that could cause an up­set, with many pledg­ing their sup­port to push Nir­vana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit into the top spot.

A cam­paign urg­ing An Id­iot Abroad star Karl Pilk­ing­ton to re­lease his ver­sion of Chas & Dave’s Ain’t No Pleasin’ You for char­ity has also been launched. Vot­ing is now open for the fifth Ir­ish Fes­ti­val Awards. There 20 cat­e­gories in all. fes­ti­valawards.ie

Green Day’s Amer­i­can Id­iot mu­si­cal will play in Dublin’s Grand Canal The­atre from Novem­ber 5th to 10th 2012. Tick­ets are on sale from to­day.
