Last year, our friends at 3epkano, the experimental music collective, delighted attendees at the Kilkenny Arts Festival with their accompaniment to a screening of The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. This year, the group teams up with Iarla Ó Lionáird, the gifted singer, to provide music for an unspooling of Paul Wegener’s Der Golem (1920). Co-directed with Carl Boese, the German film follows the creation of that mythical beast in the Jewish quarter of Prague. Featuring a memorable lead turn by Wegener, the film was a huge influence on James Whale’s Frankenstein a decade later.
