Crash Ensemble premiere ‘Thought’
The fruits of a music-based FundIt campaign will be displayed in Dublin tonight, when contemporary classical ensemble Crash Ensemble debut their new work. Having initiated a fundraising campaign earlier this year to commission renowned avant-garde composer Glenn Branca for an original piece, Thought will receive its world premiere at the Project Arts Centre. Branca said that he “was extremely interested in Donnacha’s [Dennehy, Crash co-founder] work but also in the performance of the group, which was one of the most sophisticated I’ve ever heard by any chamber ensemble anywhere.”
Also on the programme is the world premiere of Looping Point by South African composer Kevin Volans, and the second Irish performance of last year’s commission – Nico Muhly’s Drones, Variations, Ornaments. Dennehy said commissioning and performing new work is vital to the Ensemble. “FundIt offered the opportunity of another funding avenue, and we are so happy that so many people were so generous in these difficult times," he said. "It shows that people believe in the value of new art. Branca and Volans are leading composers, and it is exciting to be premiering new work by them alongside our 2011 commission from Nico Muhly."
