A Rose in step

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - LISTINGS - JIM CARROLL

SCUBA Stiff Kitten, Belfast Tomorrow 10pm £10 before 11pm/£12 048-90238700 Paul Rose is a man who wears a few hats. He’s the chap who runs the excellent Hotflush label, an electronic music imprint that has provided acts such as Joy Orbison, James Blake, Mount Kimbie, Sigha, George FitzGerald, Roska, Untold and many others to creatively roam in the past.

When he’s not taking care of label business, Rose (below) works the switches and machines as Scuba. His albums, especially Triangulation and this year’s Personality, demonstrate that Rose has an excellent command of dark, moody, liquid thumpers and other shades of the post-dubstep landscape.

Rose has proven to be a maverick spirit in terms of moving between his dubstep roots and more recent techno leanings . In the past few years he’s joined forces with Spyman’s Paul Fowler to helm the Sub-Stance night at the Berghain club in Berlin, the city he now calls home.

Support from Phil Kieran. Wiggle get up and get down (Fri, Cork); seasonal delights with Yule Hearts Run Free (Sat, Dublin); and quality Italo-Disco with I-F (Sat, Dublin)
