Tops in their class
Nineteen years after the premature passing of the Belfast flute player and founder of Altan, the Winter School in his memory continues to grow apace.
If traditional music can be said to have a fulcrum, then it shifts unquestionably to Donegal from December 27th, when Andy Irvine, Liam Ó Maonlaí, Iarla Ó Lionáird, At First Light and others will gather in the most picturesque setting of Ionad Cois Locha. This lakeside chapel looks and feels as if it was conjured by Robert Frost, and the music only serves to shore up that intense mix of camaraderie and splendid isolation.
Alongside art workshops and music classes there will be lectures, songs and tall tales told. The Winter School New Year’s Eve céilí is in the welcoming arms of Breanndán Begley and Steve Cooney this year, so expect to break on through til dawn. A musical interlude like no other.
