TEGAN AND SARA Hearthrob Warner

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - MUSIC REVIEWS - LAUREN MURPHY JIM CARROLL

From acoustic indie rock to a guest slot on a Tiesto single, these Canadian siblings have indulged every element of their musical DNA throughout their 18-year career. For their seventh album, Tegan and Sara are firmly stuck on synth-based indiepop – and why not, when quality pop producer Greg Kurstin (Pink, Kylie, Lily Allen) is involved? Goodbye, Goodbye and Drove Me Wild unexpectedly pay homage to Madonna, Gwen Stefani and Cyndi Lauper, as lyrical preoccupations with heartbreak, loneliness and rejection provide a foil to their polished, buoyant melodies. The comparatively simplistic Love They Say freshens up the mix, but the emotion of the heavier songs are audibly counteracted by the slick-yet-distracting production. There’s no question that a certain charm has been lost in the process, too. teganandsara.com FIDLAR

Fidlar Wichita Fidlar’s freak scene is a familiar one – straight out of Culver City, with a desire to neck cheap beer, skate their asses off and party until they drop. Fidlar’s sloppy, messy, buzzy, intoxicating surfpunk blitz is another kind of southern California dreaming. Going on such shorthand, it’s no surprise that their debut album sees them exhibiting similar musical vim and gusto to such tumultuous old-school heroes as The Germs, The Misfits and even the venerable Black Flag. Yet for all the dumb fun they cranking out throughout, Fidlar do stretch the template a little, and this is when things get really interesting. Cheap Beer’s magnificent happy hour glee may be the keeper for many, but it’s tracks such as Max Can’t Surf, No Waves and Paycheck that will really get you humming. facebook.com/fidlarLA
