RTÉ NSO/Finghin Collins (piano) RTÉ lyric fm CD 143 (2 CDs) Mozart’s piano concertos were the major focus of the RTÉ NSO’s first-ever associate artist, Finghin Collins. He ended his three-year stint in that role this month with an all-Mozart programme and the launch of a double-CD set of him directing four concertos from the keyboard: K415 in C, K456 in B flat, K466 in D minor, and K482 in E flat. Collins is an amiable and relaxed Mozartian who knows how to make the neat perkiness he favours sound effortless in the fast major-key movements, although the orchestra doesn’t always have a buoyancy to match. He adds embellishments with tasteful discretion, and in two concertos ventures into 20th-century cadenzas, which spices things up. Generally, though, the tension in these easy-on-the-ear performances is on the low side.
