The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - COVER STORY -

The song that started it all (although some fans would say that honour goes to Coldplay’s first single, Shiver, from the same debut album) and the song that influenced a host of bands. It is really quite magisterial and, while cynics might point to obvious comparisons (Jeff Buckley, Echo & the Bunnymen, Radiohead), there is no denying its sweep and melodic undertow. Unlike subsequent Coldplay songs, it’s heart wrenching without being smothered in syrup, intense without resorting to bombastic cliches. Oh – and it’s also unquestionably one of the best rock ballads of the Noughties.
