Is it too early for Oscar musings?
Oh, there really is nothing more annoying than the lowbrow film writer who looks for tips as to potential Oscar nominees in the Cannes line-up.
You can, of course, see where this is headed. Two places have already been booked. To be fair, when Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash screened at Sundance earlier this year, more than a few marked JK Simmons down for a best-supporting nod, and a triumphant screening here at the Directors’ Fortnight secured his spot.
This writer was among the throng awarding Simmons a 15-minute standing ovation on Tuesday evening. The real revelation was, however, Steve Carell in Bennett Miller’s hitherto unseen Foxcatcher. Almost unrecognisable behind a very good prosthetic nose, Carel plays John du Pont, sociopathic heir to the chemical fortune, who bought himself into a position as head coach of the US Olympic wrestling team and then committed an act of ruinous violence.
Given that the film just failed to finish in time for last year’s Oscar season, you could be forgiven for thinking it would come your way soon. Don’t be so silly. It has, of course, been kicked back to November. Ludicrous.
