The National for Galway Arts Fest

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - NEWS -

The programme for this year’s Galway Arts Festival, which runs from from July 14th to 27th, boasts an impressive musical line-up amidst the theatre, comedy, visual art and other spectacles.

The Festival Big Top will host an eclectic array of acts from around the world, including Brooklyn indie-rock merchants The National (July 16th) and The Waterboys (July 20th), while influential 1960s garage rockers The Sonics, contemporary violin virtuouso Owen Pallet and singer-songwriter Cass McCombs will all headline the Róisín Dubh.

There’s a healthy smattering of Irish acts, with Imelda May and The Coronas playing the Festival Big Top, while Cathy Davey plays the Róisín Dubh and Maria Doyle Kennedy will be joined by husband Kieran Kennedy at the Mick Lally Theatre.

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Dublin Gospel Choir, uileann piper Leonard Barry and a performance of the opera Orfeo are just some of the other highlights.

And if you’re up early enough on July 18th, head to Salthill’s Ladies’ Beach for a spectacular free “Dawn Chorus” choral performance.
