URI CAINE

Callithump Winter & Winter ★★★★

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - MUSIC - CORMAC LARKIN

The meticulousness with which producer Stefan Winter goes about his business is a signal compliment to his artists and his audience. Quite apart from the carefully curated roster of trailblazing talent and the gorgeous packaging that his Munich label publishes their works in, there’s the tender loving care Winter lavishes on each and every recording. This solo piano set from visionary pianist Uri Caine is defiantly old-school, captured on glorious two-track analogue tape – no retakes, edits or overdubs – on the Steinway in New York’s famous Avatar studio. Just as well, then, that Caine is worth the effort. Callithump is 11 striking original compositions by one of the most fertile and enquiring musical minds of his generation, touching on matters as diverse as Bach, Mahler, Fats Waller and Irving Berlin. winterandwinter.com
