THE NEW BASEMENT TAPES Married to My Hack

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - MUSIC -

Harvest Recordings ★★ The New Basement Tapes are a muso supergroup (including Elvis Costello, T Bone Burnett, Jim James and Marcus Mumford) assembled to record a batch of recently discovered song lyrics originally written by Bob Dylan in the late 1960s. An obvious reference point here is Mermaid Avenue, Wilco and Billy Bragg’s 1998 recording of lost Woody Guthrie songs. The difference, of course, it that Dylan is still alive and could record this song himself, but has chosen not to – perhaps because it’s half-formed, sexist and just not very good.
