Feminism is only one thing to celebrate, says Ailbhe Malone
Track of the Week: All About That Bass by Meghan Trainor A body-positive anthem with a retro feel, All About That Bass is just super. With a spoken-word bit, an adorable video and a refrain that shouts “every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top”. And the best bit? What you’re hearing is the demo – Trainor recorded it as a demo for another artist, then they mastered it and left it as it is. Don’t mess with perfection. This is the song of the season, for sure.
Jennifer Lopez has pushed back against excessive photo retouching. She told the Today Show: “I know everybody knows pictures are retouched and all this kind of stuff, but I try to do minimal because I really want it to be real. And I always have them send me the original. I’m like, ‘Wait a minute, did you do something too much?’.”
Demi Lovato has gone all in against Twitter bullies who were targeting her sister, who has scoliosis. Demi tweeted: “For anyone telling me to ‘chill’ ... The impact bullies have over the internet can lead people to suicide. I can handle the bullsh*t. But do NOT f*ck with my baby sister. I’m all for peace and spreading love UNTIL you go after a 12-YEAR-OLD who did NOTHING to you ... So disappointed that after all the conversation about cyber-bullying in this world that people would continue to do this to others. @Maddielovesyou1 you are BEAUTIFUL and the most precious little angel in my life and I will always protect you. I LOVE YOU. Physical disabilities are NOTHING to joke about. SEVERE SCOLIOSIS IS NOTHING TO MAKE FUN OF.”
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift has had an awakening thanks to her friendship with Lena Dunham. She told the Guardian: “Becoming friends with Lena – without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for – has made me realise that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so.”
