With their 2012 remix album

(Lucifer in Dub), Peaking Lights took their signature sound – hazy alt.pop with depth-charge bass lines – to its ultimate conclusion by committing fully to dub. Perhaps it will be seen as a turning point in years to come, because on Cosmic Logic they’ve taken a scalpel to their sound. Where once the songs drifted languorously for six or seven minutes, now the average length is just over four. And memorable songs abound: New Grrls updates Le Tigre’s Hot Topic with its tribute to the heroes of feminism, and Hypnotic Hustle comes on like a dub Depeche Mode. While there’s still a psychedelic glow permeating everything Peaking Lights do, bouncy pop songs such as Eyes to

See could soundtrack pool parties just as easily as heavylidded smoking sessions. The sharper focus suits. peaking lights.com CHRIS JONES
