Tough Love ★★★★

PMR Universal Island

Jessie Ware’s progression from former cub reporter for the

Jewish Chronicle to worldbeating soul diva has been one to applaud. Her debut album,

Devotion, gave her the arsenal required to make the break, but

Tough Love is in another league entirely. Ware still walks the line between sleek, sultry grooves and brittle, heartfelt, emotional ballads. But it’s the composition, poise and elan of the tracks from both sides of that coin which make you go wow, as Ware and her producers show off in some style. Be it the heat raised on the Miguel- produced r’n’b bumper

Kind... Sometimes... Maybe, the

classical pitch of Say You Love Me or the beautiful sweep of

Want Your Feeling (co-written with Dev Hynes), Ware’s second album is very special indeed. jessieware.com
