POP Ella Eyre

Academy, Dublin 9pm ¤19.90 theacademy Hotly tipped? Compared to Beyoncé? Yikes – 20-year- old Ella McMahon (pictured) may not have time on her side, but she certainly has songwriting talent. This is the first time we have the opportunity to see the singer up close and personal, without the safety net of a summer festival line-up. So, you know, impress us, if you don’t mind. TCL

THEATRE Defender of the Faith

Linenhall Arts Centre, Mayo 8pm The canny Galway-based touring company Decadent Theatre return with a new production of Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan’s debut play. It’s more than scheduling opportunism. Set on an Armagh farm in the 1980s, where a menacing visitor from the Provos arrives to find a family entrenched in paramilitarism, the play combines a family drama and psychological thriller with discreet echoes of Greek tragedy. Director Andrew Flynn notches up the tension as they attempt to root out a police informer in their midst. PC
