Handbags on the floor and chewing gum in the air as Ed tunes out

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - TICKET STUBS - Ailbhe Malone

Track of the week: Not Afraid, by Basic Tape

Hark, what’s that sound at parties around the the country? It’s the gentle plash of handbags being placed on the floor, for better to dance. And this French duo are here to help with that mission. With a housekeys riff, a four-to-the-floor beat, and a Rose Royce-style vocal refrain, it’s difficult not to groove along. And we dare you not to raise your hands to the sky as they wail: “I’m not afraid of love.”

Hero of the week: Selena Gomez.

She told Capital FM that her party trick is to spit chewing gum up into the air, and then catch it. (Seriously, you should Youtube “Selena Gomez: Gum Talent”.) Selz also gushed about bestie Taylor Swift that “she has the ability to be in any sort of room. Her presence is very strong. You can tell that she wears her heart on her sleeve, but she’s also really strong.”

Zayn Malik

wants us all to know he didn’t dump Perrie Edwards of Little Mix by text. He told the

Fader: “I have more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message. I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship over four years like that. She knows that, I know that, and the public should know that as well.”

Zero of the week: Ed Sheeran.

His acting vehicle, The Bastard

Executioner, has been cut. If you’ve been watching the TV series, you’ll have noted that Ed’s role (above) was kinda grisly (he ordered someone’s eye cut out). Alas, the series’s creator told the

Hollywood Reporter: “I think the mythology was a little too dense for some people.”
