My Wild West

Cooking Vinyl ★★★★

The third album by Elisabeth Maurus documents the folk-rocker’s return to her native ‘Wild West’ (aka the midwest) after a spell living in California. A sense of regret permeates the parts of this album, with smoky piano ballad Hollywood detailing the city’s ability to ‘break your heart’ and Shroud seeing her dwell on inner turmoil. It’s not all doom and gloom, however. These are fantastically evocative songs, but more importantly they’re irresistibly melodic. Don’t You Give Up on Me and Daughters ping and thrum with a

Fleetwood Mac-like glow, Hero quivers with a Nancy Sinatra-style sultriness, while

the wistful Sun Keeps Risin’ and

Stay dabble in laidback alt-country. If nothing else, these authentic, enjoyable songs sum up exactly why Lissie should be a star.
