EASTopened­for­busi­nessin De­cem­ber2015. It’sa small space­with­justabout enough room­fora cof­feema­chine,a coun­terof­fresh­fill­ings anda saj, anoven­whichtheEASTteam use­to­cook their­flat­bread­wraps ev­ery­day.

Iorder throughatake­away win­dowan­damdrawn­to­wards TheGreek (¤7),a falafel­wrap filled­with­EAST’ssig­na­ture falafelplus black­o­lives, feta cheese­andzhoug,whichCrotty de­scribesasaMid­dle East­ern pesto.It’smessy­butre­ward­ing work­to­chow­downon­this de­li­cious­parcelof­fresh­ness, and Imakea rightmes­so­fone ofthe lit­tleta­blesthat­line the­hallof theAr­cade, while Isipa Syn­er­chi Kom­bucha(¤2.70),brewed in Done­gal.

There­are­fourother­choices of­falafel­sand­wiches. The Orig­i­nalfea­tureshum­mus, zhougand­tahini,theMex­i­can adds­gua­camole and­sal­satothe mix,theI­tal­ianof­fer­sup moz­zarella,sun-dried­toma­toes and­pesto, while theCana­dian fea­tures­beet­rootcrush,sweet potatofires, pick­led beets and tahini. EASThave­nailedtheir falafel­recipe, andthey’re exquisite­ly­moiston­thein­side yet crispyon the­out­side.They­make up­their mix,but they­roll and­fry themto or­der,mean­ingthey’re as­fresh asy­ou­canget.

Aside­fromthe­falafel,there are­de­li­cious gluten-freesweet treats­from­lo­cal FreeBirds Bak­ery­onof­fer, in­cludinga dev­il­ish­ly­good peanut­but­ter brownie(¤3). There­aretwo type­sof­cof­feefromtwo ex­em­plary­lo­cal­roast­er­son of­fer –aBrazil­ian­bean fromGolden Beanan­danEthiopi­anbean­from Badger&Dodo,of­feringa caramel-flavoured­cof­fee(the per­fec­tac­com­pa­ni­ment­tomy brownie- ¤2.50fora flatwhite) or amore­acidic, fruity cof­fee.

What­makessim­plestreet food­likea falafel­sand­wich spe­cial­isthatit’sal­waysthe­sum ofitsparts. AtEAST,not onl­yare the­falafels great, but­the­breadis flouryand­fresh, andthe­fill­ings are­crunchyand­in­ter­est­ing. AMcE
