The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - SEVEN DAYS | FILM -

Directed by Steven Spielberg. Starring Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Penelope Wilton, Jermaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall, Bill Hader Spielberg’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s popular children’s novel, concerning a friendly giant who spirits an orphan to a magic land, profits from two flawless performances. Rylance is a sweet giant. Barnhill is charming as young Sophie. Unfortunately, the story meanders, the humour is too broad and the emotional payoff seems to have gone missing. Should we complain that a Dahl adaptation is just for smaller kids? It seems we’ve just done so. PG cert, gen release, 117 min DC
