WIENER-DOG ★★★★

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - SEVEN DAYS | FILM -

Directed by Todd Solondz. Starring Keaton Nigel Cooke, Tracy Letts, Julie Delpy, Greta Gerwig, Kieran Culkin, Connor Long, Bridget Brown, Danny DeVito, Ellen Burstyn In the style of Robert Bresson’s Au Hasard Balthazar, Weiner Dog propels its titular animal through three stories focussing on characters of ever-greater age. Cooke is a kid recovering from cancer. DeVito is a frustrated film professor. Burstyn is a bitter older later. The director of Happiness has not lost his taste for misanthropy – Burstyn calls the dog “cancer” – but the film remains properly funny and compassionate throughout. His best in a decade. Club, limited release, 88 min DC
