PETE’S DRAGON ★★★★★

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - SEVEN DAYS | FILM -

Directed by David Bowery. Starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Oona Laurence, Robert Redford Walt Disney’s campaign to remake their whole back catalogue reaches the largely unloved 1977 film about a boy (Fegley) who makes friends with a dragon. The original film’s relative obscurity permits David Lowery, director of Texan noir Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, to chip and chop to his heart’s content. He has fashioned a film closer in shape to ET than to the Disney film, but the new Pete’s Dragon has a character very much its own. Sweet, cool, kind and hugely moving. PG cert, gen release, 102 min DC
