BENVENUE FORTEPIANO TRIO Jodi Levitz (viola), Carla Moore (violin) Schumann Piano Quintet ★★★★ Avie AV 2365 Robert Schumann’s first 23 opus numbers concentrated on solo piano music. He followed these with an outpouring of more than a hundred songs, and then much shorter bursts of orchestral and chamber music. This new disc couples the biggest of the chamber works, the mighty Piano Quintet – which put the genre on the musical map – and two later and rather less well-known works, the Stücke im Volkston for cello and piano, and the

Märchenbilder for viola and piano. The performances of these later pieces are impressive in the way they convey a sense of having all the time in the world to let the music speak; the luminous account of the quintet doesn’t have quite the same freedom. url.ie/e8oo MICHAEL DERVAN
