Overview Effect ★★★ Cognitive Shift

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - MUSIC REVIEWS - JIM CARROLL

Everything looks and feels different from outer space. The title refers to psychological shift in awareness reported by astronauts when they look back at this planet from their travels. Ideas around such perspectives have inspired London composer and multi-instrumentalist Roger Goula’s debut album for One Little Indian’s new contemporary classical label. Goula’s minimalism works superbly with the space traveller concept, the cinematic and widescreen sweep of tones and textures in his work allowing the listener to imagine the moods and emotions experienced from that remote perch many thousands of miles from home. With strings by Thomas Gould, Peter Gregson, Lucy Railton and Stephen Upshaw, Overview Effect provides a rich seam of music perfect for stargazers and skywatchers alike. rogergoula.com
