BROOKZILL!

Throwback to the Future ★★★ Tommy Boy

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - MUSIC REVIEWS - JIM CARROLL

Old-school rap fans will recognise many of the names involved in this project to blend New York hip-hop’s sass and attitude with the sultry swing of Brazilian music. The well-travelled Prince Paul, De La Soul producer Don Newkirk, Digable Planets’ Ladybug Mecca, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Mr Len, Antipop Consortium’s Beans, Kid Koala and Count Bass D join forces with Gorila Urbano and a cohort of Brazilian MCs to see what the match-up can create. It’s a fascinating encounter, especially when the mix of styles suits the lean of the material. Tracks such as Maralém are especially evocative, with party vibes to the fore on Mad Dog In Yoruba and

Todos Os Terreiros. It’s a colourful and often evocative affair which reminds you that hip-hop’s back-in-the-day flavours can still pack a punch. soundcloud.com/ brookzill
