What Colin Stetson (above) does to a saxophone is not natural, and may well be illegal in some states. The Michigan- born, Montreal-based multi- reed player has answered the call from Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Tom Waits and The Chemical Brothers to name but a few, traversing a musical landscape that encompasses everything from free jazz to dark metal with a viscerality and sheer commitment to sound that would fell a lesser man. But it’s as a solo performer that Stetson really breaks away from the pack. In fact, it’s hard to believe that all that sound is coming from just one guy with a saxophone. Mesmeric, hypnotic, and deep as an ocean.
