ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST

The Irish Times - Friday - The Ticket - - FILM | SEVEN DAYS | - TB

Nicholson leads the revolt in an unavoidably allegorical mental institution. This welcome reissue of Forman’s Oscar winner confirms its power and resilience. The film can’t quite ditch its suspicion that all women are sluts or emasculating “ball-cutters” or that Nurse Ratched is their scary queen. The sexual politics have dated, but conversely Cuckoo’s overlap with Michel Foucault’s ideas on the construction and socio-political appropriation of madness remains potent and urgent. And it’s funny. Club, limited release, 144 min
