Last May, Coppola became the first woman to win best director at the Cannes Film Festival in 56 years, with The Beguiled( Yu li ya So lnt se va won in 1961 for her Russian WWII drama, Chronicle of Flaming Years ). “I feel proud, ofcourse,” she says. “But I was shocked when someone told me I was only the second woman to win at Cannes.

“I felt proud because my daughters were really proud and so many other women artists all could feel like they were celebrating with me. So it was great to be part of that. Even strangers on the street were sh outing congratulations. There were three women in Cannes this year. I’ m surprised things have moved so slowly since I began. I’m still trying to put my voice out there. But support for women film makers really has to come from within the studio system.”
