The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra’s mostly Nordic programme brings musical perspectives from Finland (Sibelius’s Finlandia and Swan of Tuonela), Norway (Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No. 1) and Denmark (a Goodnight Polka, Champagne Galop and Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop by Hans Christian Lumbye, a northern challenger to the popular dances written by members of the Strauss family in Vienna). Added to this is a German perspective on Scotland through Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, where the violin soloist is Giovanni Guzzo (replacing the advertised soloist, the orchestra’s co-leader Elaine Clark). Holding everything together is the Hungarian conductor Gergely Madaras.
