There have been more than a few excellent films about artists. Cinema is a visual medium, after all.
Lust for Life (1956)
Very much an epic inthe oldschool, Vincente Minnelli’ s study of Vincent Van Gogh made great use of Technicolor, European locations and a wrought Kirk Douglas( above ).
Andrei Rublev (1966)
A contender for Andrei Tarkovsky’s finest film, this sprawling epic considers the life of the titular 15 th-century icon painter.
Wonderful, slightly overlooked film that now seems like a spiritual sister to Maudie. Yolande More au plays the French naive artist Séraphine Louis.
Mr Turner (2014)
Mike Leigh’s films casts Timothy Spallasan admirably eccentric variation on JMWTurner.Grunt!
Glossy but absorbing study of Frida Kahlo, starring Sal ma H aye kat her best. Suave direction from Julie Taymor.
