Lust for Life (1956)

Very much an epic inthe oldschool, Vincente Minnelli’ s study of Vincent Van Gogh made great use of Technicolor, European locations and a wrought Kirk Douglas( above ).

A contender for Andrei Tarkovsky’s finest film, this sprawling epic considers the life of the titular 15 th-century icon painter.

Séraphine(2008)

Wonderful, slightly overlooked film that now seems like a spiritual sister to Maudie. Yolande More au plays the French naive artist Séraphine Louis.

Mr Turner (2014)

Mike Leigh’s films casts Timothy Spallasan admirably eccentric variation on JMWTurner.Grunt!
