Live at Ronnie Scotts ★★★★ Abstract Logix

It’s not entirely clear – even to John McLaughlin himself – how many more nights like this he will have, but the great English guitarist knows arthritis is catching up with him, so he says he plays every night like its his last. Certainly there is a retrospective air to this live set from the London club where McLaughlin began what has been an extraordinary journey through music. From Miles Davis and Mahavishnu to Shakti and beyond, the Yorkshire-born guitarist has blazed a dazzling trail through 50 years of music, raising the bar for all who followed him, and here, with his muscular quartet, he channels that history into one more precious night on stage. johnmclaugh
