Rugs by the book
Rugs and Jewels, an exhibition inspired by the Book of Kells, takes place in the City Assembly House of the Irish Georgian Society in Sth William Street, Dublin, from November 8th to 10th. Originally shown in Milan, it is the brainchild of Milan- based Irish artist Nuala Goodman and the Italian designer Donatella Pellini, the event showcasing seven rugs by Goodman and seven pieces of jewellery by Pellini. The two reinterpret some of the famous book’s illuminated illustrations in a contemporary way inspired by the modernity of their intense colours and fantastical creatures twisting around the ornate lettering – which has been recomposed into meaningful words. The rugs, made in wool and silk by craftsmen in India, can be displayed on either on floors or as wallhangings while the jewellery features “wearable messages” handmade in the Pellini workshop in Milan.
