Donegal power past Galway to set up final meeting with Cork
Donegal’s dynamic duo of Geraldine McLaughlin and Yvonne McMonagle put Galway to the sword in yesterday’s Division One semi-final at Markievicz Park – scoring 5-8 between them in a 5-11 to 1-7 victory.
McLaughlin scored an incredible 4-4 and McMonagle added 1-4 as Donegal, Division Two champions last year, qualified for their very first Division One final.
McLaughlin won and netted an early penalty as Donegal led 1-4 to 0-3 at half-time.
The game really came to life after the break as despite conceding a fine goal to Roisín Leonard early in the second half, Donegal were in the ascendancy.
McMonagle goaled in the 40th minute with McLaughlin’s second goal arriving six minutes later and she completed her hat-trick with four minutes of normal time left. She bagged goal number four, with two minutes of normal time left, when she converted another penalty.
Donegal will meet holders Cork who qualified for a tenth successive Division One final with a 1-16 to 0-13 win over Cork on Saturday.
Orla Finn and Eimear Scally combined for 1-10, Finn top-scored at Nowlan Park with a haul of 0-7, including four points from play, as Scally collected 1-3 from play.
Cork were 1-10 to 0-6 clear at half-time.
