‘Fake news’ in Donegal

The Irish Times - Monday - Sport - - Gaelic Games Championship 2017 -

Staying in Donegal, a curious incident played out this week. Brian McEniff, in the Donegal Democrat, alleged that some Donegal fans had verbally abused manager Rory Gallagher’s father during the Galway loss.

“I want to condemn out of hand the abuse suffered by Rory Gallagher’s father, Gerry, by a number of Donegal supporters,” he wrote. “I did not see the incident but I was made aware of it.”

Gallagher Snr, who has been attending Donegal games for 54 years, set the record straight. “I wish to state categorically that I have never been victim of any verbal abuse from Donegal fans,” he said, adding “fake news, methinks”.
